This Sunday, May 23rd is San Diego’s Sicilian Festival in Little Italy! It is a FREE one-day showcase of Sicilian cuisine, music, dance, history, and culture. Dance in the street and watch musicians on four different stages, sip vino or beer in the Peroni beer gardens, try out Sicilian food specialties, play in the free kids’ area, and check out the World’s Cup Puma Soccer Fan Zone. Located on four blocks of India Street between Date and Ash Streets.

Also, this year The Sicilian Festival has partnered with the San Diego Italian Film Festival for the screening of the movie, The Sicilian Girl. It's the true story of a courageous 17-year old Sicilian girl who turns on the Mafia. The movie will screen at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park on Thursday, August 19th at 7:00 pm. Entrance is free but contributions are encouraged.Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17261313426425792415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986499997591476069.post-62090266613364192462010-05-20T08:07:00.000-07:002010-05-20T08:07:46.249-07:00Album ArtIf you can't part with your favorite vinyl from yesteryear, why not feature it?

This is one of my favorite decorating projects. Not only is it inexpensive and requires minimal effort, but the frames are easy to switch out to change looks. We lined four album frames above the sofa, that is always a hard place for me to decorate, I think this is a perfect solution.

The hardest part is deciding which albums to feature! For the look of this room, we chose Talking Heads, Stop Making Sense, The Byrds Greatest Hits, Rolling Stones, Get Your Ya Ya's Out, and M. Ward, Post War.

Mark insisted on framing the Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass Band, Whipped Cream and Other Delights. If you are a guy, you get it. I only allowed this cover on the wall because the colors matched so well.......

The best thing is that the frames can be purchased for under $10 each. We waited for them to go on sale at Michael's and paid $4 each.Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17261313426425792415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986499997591476069.post-37971113421181297182010-05-07T10:43:00.000-07:002010-05-12T09:56:40.709-07:00Adams Ave. Farmers MarketThis just in, the location for the Farmers Market had to change at the last minute, vendors will be located in the Rite Aid parking lot. I'm not sure if that is permanent or just this week.....
May 12 is the first day of the new Farmers Market! It will be every Wednesday from 3 to 7 PM all year-round, rain or shine.

Located on 40th Street just South of Adams Avenue, stretching from just south of the traffic signal at the I-15 on-ramp to where 40th street dead-ends at Madison. The site is bordered by Ward Canyon Park on the west and the I-15 retaining wall on the East.

The Adams Avenue Business Association has spent a great deal of effort getting this to happen, a series of set backs delayed the project for years. But with all that worked out, they promise us fresh fruits, vegetables and farm-fresh eggs; fresh baked bread and pastries, fish, meat, cheese, fresh flowers, sea salts and spices, olives and sauces. They will have a stage area with live music, local artists and craftspeople, and it will be social environment so people can mingle with their neighbors. See you there!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17261313426425792415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986499997591476069.post-8288771081056410082010-04-27T09:50:00.000-07:002010-04-27T09:50:16.542-07:00Adams Ave. Root Festival 2010I probably should have posted this BEFORE the event so that if you didn't know about it you might have gone too, but I didn't. Sorry.

This years annual two day event included over 40 live bands, food, arts and crafts, farmers market, beer garden and fun for the whole family. The live music features folk, traditional roots, bluegrass, rockabilly, and much more. It's a great way to keep the "real" music alive and introduce younger generations to where it all comes from.

Some of this years highlights include John Doe (from X, I love him), The Watson Twins, Sara Watkins, Gregory Page, Candy Kane, Steve Poltz, and many others.

Here is a video I shot (amateur) of Sara Watkins, LOVE that fiddle!
Since it is within walking distance from our house, we visit pretty much every weekend.

Organic food galore! Pretty much 80% of the market is organic and locally grown produce. The rest is filled with local artisans promoting their crafts. You will find everything from food and flower vendors, glass, canvas, paper and metal artisans, original wire art, hand-made clothing and accessories, unique jewelry and much, much more.

This is a little treasure I just HAD to have! It's a ring with an elastic band, so cute and what better way to welcome Spring?

Of course we never go home without a bag full of organic produce, this trip scored us this beautiful red chard and some giant green onions! Here is one of my favorite Chard recipes.
Here's another great monthly event going on in our neighborhood. 30th on 30th takes place on the 30th of every month and includes participation from many of the fantastic bars and restaurants on 30th Street. They are all offering some killer specials on drinks, appetizers and meals!!

Participants include some of my favorite places such as Cantina Mayahuel, Alchemy, True North, Ritual Tavern, Sea Rocket Bistro, The Linkery, Urban Solace.....the list goes on and on and on.

So if you have always wanted to try one of these places, now is the time. Get down there this Tuesday and take a stroll (or ride your bike) down 30th and take advantage of this great opportunity!!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17261313426425792415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986499997591476069.post-42983320743510681452010-03-23T20:17:00.000-07:002010-03-23T20:17:03.307-07:00Things To Do With Chalk Board Paint

I have been wanting to tackle this project for a long time. I found this awesome frame in a thrift store about 2 years ago and I never could find just the right picture for it.

Then I got an itch to buy some chalk board spray paint, what can I do with that? It says ANY surface, should I paint a whole wall? The refrigerator? The back door? The possibilities are endless.......

But for my first chalk board project, I kept it simple, and where did I put that old thrift store frame?

I found the paint at Home Depot for $ 4.95. You can also buy it in a larger can, but for my project, this is fine. FYI, this product must be bought in the store, you can't buy it on line.

First, I had to remove the ugly old painting (I sure hope that wasn't a rare, priceless Van Gogh!) easily done with my handy screwdriver.

Since the base backing board that was behind the old painting was pretty strong, I just decided to paint right on it.

Make sure you use the spray paint in a well ventilated area, preferably outside!

Hold the can about 12 " away from your surface and spray in even smooth strokes and avoid pooling or dripping paint. It's better to start with a lighter hand and go over it again later.

It says it needs to fully dry for at least 24 hours before you can write on it, but I think it was good to go in less than 10 hours, I get impatient!

I think it turned out super cute! Now, what else can I paint......Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17261313426425792415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986499997591476069.post-2797864276917227402010-03-12T12:07:00.000-08:002010-03-12T12:07:36.453-08:00Need A Ride?I'm all about supporting alternative methods of getting around town, especially when drinking is involved.

Omar Passons, a long time North Park resident, is getting ready to launch the Park-2-Park shuttle. The 36 passenger shuttle buses will take passengers through North Park, South Park, University Heights and Normal Heights every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Passengers can utilize the shuttle throughout its operating hours of 6 p.m. to midnight on Thursdays, and 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The cost will be a mere $5.

The shuttle, according to Passons, will not only generate more business for commercial enterprises, but help reduce traffic on local streets. Not just a ride, volunteers will be on hand to greet patrons and talk about the historical aspects of the neighborhoods, “to give them a feel for the communities.” “My service,” says Passons, “will show significant respect and deference to our local history and quirkiness and it will cater to a broad audience.”

They are going to try the program out starting April 22, so lets all get on the bus and support this local business!

You can read the whole North Park News article here.
You know how when you move into a new place and all your stuff is in boxes and the last thing you want to do is COOK anything? Most of you will agree that is a great time to order a pizza for delivery. Well, we were so impressed by Pizza Gourmet Express that we ordered pizza THREE nights in a row, and we keep going back.

Their traditional raised edge crust is perfect for the "The Works" pizza, and we discovered the herb thin crust is most excellent with just about everything. All of the ingredients are fresh and of quality. We haven't tried it yet, but we hear the duck confit pizza is truly amazing with basil pesto, slow roasted duck, goat cheese and figs, wow!

Another cool thing about Pizza Gourmet Express is that they deliver pizza's in the University Heights area by bicycle, I love seeing local businesses doing the green thing, every little bit helps.

If you happen to be in the area, stop by and pick up a pie. They are located right under the University Heights sign on Park Ave. across from Small Bar (another local favorite place!).Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17261313426425792415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986499997591476069.post-73219016085817283052010-02-05T16:37:00.000-08:002010-02-05T16:37:01.774-08:00The NationalI just have to plug one of my most favorite bands The National, not only because their music is AWESOME, but they are also coming to San Diego on May 23, 2010!!!

If you haven't seen them before now is the time, they don't tour very often. We caught them at Street Scene in 08 and it was one of the best shows I saw all year. This time they are playing at Spreckles Theater downtown, not my favorite venue in town, but at least it has cool ambiance. Should be a great show!
What am I doing?

Even though we are just moving a little over a mile away, our current neighborhood and the new one, are like night and day. In the new house we will have a garage, indoor washer and dryer, a cute yard (with grape and jasmine plants!), better street parking, and there are great restaurants and shops within walking distance, all for the same rent we pay now.

University Heights is known for some great eats. We found Soltan Banoo a long time ago and it is still one of our favorite Mediterranean restaurants in San Diego. There is also the Ethiopian restaurant that we want to try but the wait is always too long, Muzita Bistro. El Zarape is always good for inexpensive Mexican food, and Small Bar is our new favorite bar within walking distance. I'm sure once we get moved and settled in I will get out and find more great places, so stay tuned!

Now, what did I do with that packing tape........Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17261313426425792415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986499997591476069.post-91615480883946476142010-01-18T22:33:00.000-08:002010-01-19T07:02:35.067-08:00San Diego Tide Pools
Where are the best tide pools in San Diego?

If you are planning a trip to San Diego, or even if you live here and just want to get away for a night or two, check out the Ocean Beach Hotel. We stayed there last weekend and found it to be a pretty decent stay. They offer reasonable winter rates and lets face it, any time of year is a nice time in San Diego!

OB is known as a small beach community. Newport Street is the main drag where you will find a funky assortment of antique shops, thrift stores, bars and restaurants. Don't be alarmed if you see Deadheads with dreadlocks, street musicians, artists and activists, and girls in bikinis roaming the streets, they are harmless, for the most part.

While you are in OB, you must stop in for a glass of wine and a bite to eat at The Vine. We had dinner there again a couple weeks ago and it is still my favorite place for good food, beer and of course wine. Take advantage of the happy hour ALL NIGHT on Tuesdays!
Much more than just a Christmas gift, this will be a family heirloom forever.

My incredibly talented Mom started this quilt over a year ago. Why she decided to make ME a "crazy quilt" is a mystery to me......
The amount of time and effort that went into making this quilt is astonishing. Here, I did some questions and answers, straight from the artists <strike>mouth</strike> keyboard!

How many hours would you estimate it took you to complete? 14 months! Approximately 700 hours! Gosh, at even $5.00 and hour…. The quilt would cost $3,500…. Not including the material, thread, embroidery thread, batting and the sheet for the underside of the quilt!

What was the average amount of time that you worked on it per week? Around 10 hours, usually 2 hours a night, for 5 nights a week.

What was the most challenging part of making this quilt? Trying to not do too many “flower” stitches and putting colors next to each other that looked ok.

What step did you enjoy the most? The embroidery work on the top.

How long did each square take to complete? Some squares were finished in one evening and some took a week.

Percentage wise, how much work was done by hand, how much by machine? The only machine stitching was sewing the squares together and then sewing the top, middle and bottom together.

Have you started the next quilt yet? I’m thinking about starting a baby quilt! I would also love to do a Christmas Quilt…..

Sharon Boucher is a multi-talented artist and entrepreneur. After a few years of living in the Carolinas to perfect her southern charm, she is finally back in California. Her artistry ranges from acrylic tole painting to water painting, quilting, cooking, home decorating and entertaining. When she is not doing all of that, she loves being in the garden with her husband Mike. She is currently working on her own blog.....
Love my quilt, love my Mom!!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17261313426425792415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986499997591476069.post-69474804990728239542009-12-23T23:10:00.000-08:002010-01-17T14:37:31.995-08:00The Ring!<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Since I work in the jewelry industry, I know a thing or two about jewelry. I also know that I am not your traditional diamond ring kind of girl.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
But all of the sudden, I find myself engaged......... and picking out rings for myself, (wtf?)

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I knew the first time I saw the picture below that I wanted an Alexandrite center stone.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The thing that I love about this stone is the changing colors. Depending on the type of light it is in, it changes color from light pink, to purple, to blue to turquoise to green, it is so awesome!! It kind of reminds me the popular "mood rings" of the 70's, only this is way better!

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Not only is it gorgeous, but it is also incredibly symbolic. Known as a healing stone, alexandrite is specifically associated with balancing the mind and helping to achieve calmness, emotional balance, and to bring about change, happiness, and success.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">So, with the center stone determined, the next part was deciding on a mounting. I wanted a low profile, not something that will stick out too high and get caught on everything. This is the one we chose.......

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I know that this ring, like this commitment, is for the rest of my life. <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> I hope the ring will continue to inspire us to grow and change for the better as a couple, as well as individuals....... we are incredibly lucky to know so much love!

Mark and I first met on a street corner in Little Italy, San Diego in August 2008. It's a long story, but if it weren't for my cousin Krista, her friend Shannon, Slow Travel and Radiohead, we probably never would have met.

He was so nervous, not because he worried I wouldn't accept his proposal, but he wanted it to be special.

The final destination, after several "tease locations", (yes, I was anticipating his proposal), was the Zoro Garden in Balboa Park.

If you are not familiar with the Zoro Garden, it is a secluded area that was originally designed as a nudist retreat back in the 1930's. These days, it is a beautiful grotto garden lined with plants and trees that create a habitat essential for the life cycle of butterflies.

I couldn't have imagined anything more sweet or more beautiful. Mark on his knee, the garden, the butterflies, the insanely gorgeous December day in San Diego. There were a lot of emotions and a lot of tears, and of course I said yes!

Marks gravel encrusted knee!

Check back later to find out all about my non-traditional but incredibly awesome engagement ring!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17261313426425792415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986499997591476069.post-62931683473565955622009-12-16T23:21:00.000-08:002009-12-23T21:35:27.831-08:00The Ritual Tavern

I love this place. The Ritual Tavern is a place you can go to relax, enjoy a good beer or a glass of wine, and enjoy some good comfort food. You don't have to scream to your server to place your order, you could actually have a conversation with someone. It is appropriately dim, mellow, and everyone is friendly and cool.

Some of my favorite food items from the menu;

The house onion rings - Ale battered, served with house remoulade - I also love their house made ketchup.

Fish and Chips - Domestic farm-raised catfish with house cut fries and coleslaw - you would never guess it is catfish, very light and still delicious.

Shrimp Scampi - Garlic, butter, sherry and ciabatta bread, yummmmmy!

Sadlebrush Gumbo - Jidori chicken, mexican shrimp, niman's andouille sausage organic long-grain wild rice- I haven't actually tried this yet, but it is top of my list for the next visit!

The servers and bartenders are always super cool and happy to pour you a taste of a new beer before you buy a whole glass. They keep the selection interesting and feature lots of local craft breweries.

They have happy hour specials Tuesday thru Saturday from 5:30 to 7:30, and on Sundays you can take advantage of specials from 3:30 to 9:30.
There's another new tavern in town. I've been wanting to check out the West Coast Tavern (formerly Hawthorns) for weeks and we finally got there last weekend.

First off, the decor is awesome, it is literally inside the old Birch North Park Theater on at 2891 University Ave. in San Diego. Originally built in 1929, the building itself is full of unique charm and history. I instantly fell in love with the red vinyl booths and the brick walls.

The menu is limited but everything sounds great. We ordered the Triple Dip, three different types of hummus with pita bread which was very tasty. Of course I was checking out what other people were eating, those Angus Sliders looked tempting!

They have a decent beer selection on tap, I chose Stones IPA. The wine list is reasonable with most selections under $30 a bottle, and an assortment to choose from by the glass. They also had an interesting selection of specialty drinks.

The service was great, our server was super friendly and informative. She told us they hope to have some live music in the evenings soon, it has just the right ambiance for some jazz.

They are doing a big NYE masquerade party this year, it might be something to consider? Here is the info, nice music line up. westcoastclublife.comTiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17261313426425792415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986499997591476069.post-40103507273624798782009-12-04T16:46:00.000-08:002009-12-04T16:46:44.222-08:00New Blog!I know, I can barely keep up with this one, I must be insane!
I started working on this new venture about a month ago and I am really happy with where it's going. Of course it will evolve and change a million times before I am satisfied, or maybe never, but I sure enjoy the process.

Why not a set of Bocce balls?

We take advantage of every opportunity to be outdoors and enjoy the San Diego sunshine. One of our favorite activities is playing Bocce. It's free, it gets you outdoors and provides moderate exercise while having fun.

There are hundreds of parks and grassy areas perfect for a game of bocce, you can pretty much play anywhere. It is fast becoming a popular activity for young and old, it's a perfect game for the whole family.

You can get a really good set for about $100, but you could also find a decent set for under $50.

Avid sushi lover that I am, I am always in search of the BEST sushi restaurant in town.

We recently ended up at RK Cafe Sushi in Hillcrest because Sushi Deli was as usual, too crowded. We were promptly seated but we must have gotten there right in time because there was soon a line forming.

We took advantage of the beer and saki specials, and then ordered edemame which was a little on the dry side, but still served it's purpose. I really loved the spicy tuna salad, it was REALLY spicy, and the ginger dressing worked nicely with it.

We also ordered tuna sashimi which was fresh and tasty. Next was the Washington roll, not my favorite but it was OK. We still wanted just a little bit more and ordered something from the specials board and it turned out to be my favorite roll.

The service was great, prompt but not rushed, attentive but not hovering. I liked the prices and the menu. It did get a little crowded, it isn't a large place, but it is still comfortable. We will for sure go back again!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17261313426425792415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986499997591476069.post-31359938980302880112009-11-11T21:54:00.000-08:002009-11-12T11:48:03.588-08:00Beer Week In San Diego<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 186px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VtMeOGxq2z4/SvxmTfF0TbI/AAAAAAAAEfE/q-I3-sOEI-k/s400/SDBW-Black-Type-Outlines2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403306137887198642" />
What a tragedy, surf, sunshine (in November) and some of the BEST beer in the world.

The official San Diego Beer Week is in full swing November 6 to the 15th, but there is always a good craft beer within a mile most anywhere in San Diego theses days. To advocate this point, San Diego was recently named in Men's Journal as the number one beer city in America.

There is too much going on to list it all, but click here for the whole schedule of events. Get out there and enjoy a pint or two!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17261313426425792415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986499997591476069.post-82052918975989266892009-11-07T13:56:00.000-08:002009-11-07T14:31:37.772-08:00Wine Anyone?<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 73px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VtMeOGxq2z4/SvXzvPJ6pxI/AAAAAAAAEaE/jejEuAlcMMM/s400/Wine+Tasting+sign.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401491320948303634" />

We like wine. Allot. It didn’t take long to figure out that we needed to find the most affordable source to maintain the drinking habits of two wine lovers that are not exactly rich. Then we found the San Diego Wine Co.

The San Diego Wine Co. is located on Mira Mesa Blvd. just east of the 805. Judging from the crowd that was there today, it’s quickly losing its “best kept secret” status.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 212px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VtMeOGxq2z4/SvXzJVhSF1I/AAAAAAAAEZ8/_7LE9dv6TKY/s320/Wine+bottles.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401490669821892434" />
Open to the public 7 days a week, you can find some really good deals on some really good wines. They offer a wide selection of domestic and foreign wines from all over the world in a warehouse style. Displayed right in the case, each selection is well described.

On Saturday you can participate in their wine tastings which is a great way to try new wines. I think it’s usually at least 10 tastings for $10. The entire staff is great. They are very knowledgeable and make you feel like no question is a dumb question.

I highly recommend you join their weekly newsletter and learn more.
